The Polylithic Tech Tree

Each node opens a few toys. That is a gift. Spend it like an adult.

Tech Tree

Press T. The Polylithic technology menu is not a Civ-sized quilt. Launch players who liked the game specifically praised the pacing: a building or tool unlocks a short list, so the brain never drowns. This page is how to steer that kindness. For the recipes themselves, stay in how to craft and the items list.

The tree is the story’s skeleton even in sandbox. Paleolithic nodes make you a better forager. Later nodes point at farming, better heat, and the Neolithic toys the trailer sold. You can rush the pretty ones and starve. You can also ignore the tree and wonder why a quest wants fertilizer you cannot see.

A first-night research order

Unlock whatever sits under flint, fire, and basic tools first. If a node is required to place a hut or a hide rack, it is not optional. If a node is dye, decoration, or a weapon you cannot feed with string, it waits. The settlement bed is a higher priority than a cosmetic bone trim.

Second band: butcher efficiency, blades via grindstone, and ranged weapons you can restock. A bow node you can actually feed with wood is worth more than a spear node that drinks the last stalk. Third band: farming, fertilizer, domestic animals, stoves. Those are campaign-shaped. If a story tick names them, you now have a reason. If it does not, keep hunting caribou.

How unlocks really feel

Because each step is small, the tree is easy to over-click. Every node still has a material bill hiding behind it. Open the gathering planner when you pick a target and mark the bill before you celebrate. A glowing icon is not a finished grindstone.

Some nodes look like they should drop from animals. Blades, polished parts, and needles are station products. If the tree says you can make it and the C menu disagrees, you are missing a placed station from the buildings page, not a secret cave.

Story pressure versus sandbox freedom

Story mode will yank you toward specific unlocks. When a quest names seeds, fertilizer, or a house type, treat that as the next node even if you wanted a prettier spear. When the quest is silent or broken, do not rage-unlock the entire age. See how to complete the story.

Sandbox can live in the Paleolithic forever. That is valid. A group that loves co-op hunts does not owe the Neolithic a favor. Research the nodes that shorten the loop you already like.

When the tree lies

If the game does not recognize an item you crafted for a tech quest, you are in tick-bug country. Restart once. Do not refund the node. Do not start a new world because ochre dye is ugly. The tree is small on purpose. Use that. Pick two unlocks, finish their bills, and go back outside before the menu becomes the whole evening.

What not to research yet

Skip dye, bone trim, and the weapon you cannot restock. Those nodes feel like progress and spend the stalk you needed for a hut cover. If the camp cannot sleep, cook, and butcher, the tree is lying about being ready for fashion. Come back after the survival checklist is boring. A later node that needs a stove or a farm is also a later walk. Mark it on the gathering planner and leave the menu.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I open the Polylithic tech tree?

Press T, or find Technology in the pause cluster on a controller.

What should I unlock first?

Fire, flint tools, hut, hide rack. Vanity and late farming wait until the camp can eat.

Why is a researched item still locked in crafting?

You probably need a placed station. Check buildings and how to craft.

Does sandbox use the same tree?

Yes. Sandbox just removes the quests that shove you toward farming.
