How to Play Sandbox in Polylithic

Skip the dream. Keep the fire, the tribe, and the bison that still wants you dead.

How to Play Sandbox

Sandbox is the Polylithic mode for people who finished the dream tutorial once, hosted friends, or simply refused a campaign that stalls on a hut prompt. The 1.0 store text calls it an infinitely generated world for players who prefer to skip the story and cause problems at their own pace. That sentence is accurate. It is also incomplete. Sandbox still has hunger, body weight, enemy tribes, cooking minigames, and a tech tree. It just will not hold your hand through a cinematic about a mysterious sickness.

If you have never lit a fire on this build, read getting started first. Sandbox removes the dream, not the need for flint. Craft rocks into flint in the pack, place a campfire you can walk back to, and lock a hut bed before you admire generation. The survival checklist still applies. A pretty seed is not a save point.

What Sandbox actually changes

Story mode walks you from Paleolithic forager toward Neolithic farmer with named NPCs, monuments, and quests that can refuse to tick. Sandbox generates terrain, wildlife, and enemy camps without that script. You still unlock technology. You still recruit. You still cook. You do not wait on “A Dream Come True” or a Lonely Fox errand. For co-op groups, that is usually the point. How to play co-op and multiplayer assume most lobbies land here.

1.0 added sandbox-only courtesy that campaign players keep asking about. The outpost can be moved in Sandbox. New sandbox structures shipped with the full release. Totem storage still expands with upgrades. Treat those as village toys, not as a second campaign. If a building refuses to count toward a milestone, check whether the milestone even exists in this mode before you restart.

First hour without the dream

Pick a landmark and note the sun. Open controls once so shout, emotes, and the merged orders menu are not mysteries during a hyena pull. Gather rocks, twigs, and stalk. Make flint. Light a fire close to the first hut frame. Roast something. Sleep. Only then walk toward plains animals.

Generation will dump you next to a river, a forest edge, or a bison commute. Rivers are clay and fish. Forest edges are roots, nuts, and the occasional bear. Open plains are caribou if you are lucky and a wipe if you are curious. Read biomes and how to hunt before you treat every herd as groceries. The new mean bison and the Mammoth boss still exist here. Sandbox is not a creative-mode zoo.

Tribe, farming, and why you still need discipline

You can ignore farming forever in Sandbox. You can also push the tech tree into fields, fertilizer, and the Neolithic toys covered on farming. Fertilizing a field accelerates growth. That is a 1.0 line, not a rumor. It still wants a camp that can spare people. Recruit only when happiness holds. How to form a tribe and villagers apply whether or not a narrator is watching.

Enemy tribes spawn in generated space too. Scout. Do not parade ten silhouettes over a ridge for a screenshot. The enemy tribes page is the raid briefing. Companions still eat. Heel, Hunt, Idle, Follow, and petting still work. Taming is optional flavor until the stockpile can feed a dog that is not your dinner.

Co-op hosting rules for generated worlds

Host Sandbox if the group wants chopping, cooking, and yelling at wildlife more than cutscenes. One kitchen. One person who moves the outpost. Everyone else hauls stalk. Version 1.0.0.24 fixed clients who could not cut trees or attack animals; if a guest is punching air, update before you blame the seed. Version 1.0.0.25 fixed boats falling through unloaded chunks and granted some milestones to all online players. Still save at a hut before anyone places a shuttle on a cliff.

Sandbox is the honest teacher. It will not explain flint. It will not pause the bison. Use the guides hub for the verbs, this page for the mode choice, and the review if you expected a story and got a generator instead.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does Polylithic Sandbox skip the tutorial?

It skips campaign beats and the dream script. You still need flint, fire, and a bed. Start with getting started if this is your first world.

Can I move the outpost in Sandbox?

Yes. 1.0 lets you move the outpost in Sandbox. Campaign placement is stricter. See settlement.

Is Sandbox better for co-op?

Usually. Friends do not want stalled story ticks. Read how to play co-op before you host nine people on a pretty seed.

Do enemy tribes and the Mammoth boss appear in Sandbox?

Yes. Generated worlds still have hostile camps, mean bison, and boss-scale hunts. Treat them like campaign threats.
