Enemy Tribes in Polylithic
They also wanted the river. They also have spears. Scout before you shout hello.
Enemy tribes are a 1.0 feature, not a 2023 rumor. The store pitch is polite: not everyone will welcome your progress, and other humans have their own ideas about how prehistory should go. The patch list is less poetic. 1.0 added a new enemy encampment to Story, random clothing on enemies, NPC appearances that actually vary, and more people you can sometimes recruit instead of bury. This page is the raid briefing. It is not a license to parade the whole village over a ridge for a screenshot.
If your own camp cannot feed five mouths, you are not ready. How to form a tribe and settlement come first. A raid that costs an elder is how Not a Loner slips a week.
What an enemy camp actually is
It is a human place with storage, fires, and people who will shoot back. They wear random outfits after 1.0, so you cannot memorize one hat as βthe bad guys.β In Story, a new encampment was added on purpose; walking the campaign without scouting is how you learn that the next quest marker is also an ambush. In Sandbox, generated space can still sprout hostile neighbors. Treat fog-of-war silhouettes as weather with spears.
You can recruit more NPCs than older builds allowed. Some member quests auto-complete when the condition is already true. Quest NPCs are supposed to disappear once they join; 1.0 fixed several cases where they loitered like ghosts. If a named person is both a raid target and a recruit prompt, stop swinging. Read the interaction. Crouch or aim to break a conversation if the radial is lying on top of a spear.
How to pick a fight you can afford
Scout with two, not ten. Take range. Take a shout for spacing, not for a war cry montage. Lock on. Use combat verbs: javelins, bows, cliffs, stamina. Melee into a campfire circle is how you donate clothes that 1.0 finally lets take damage. Clothes now reduce incoming hits; they also break. Repair or replace after a raid, not during one.
Assistants and companions attack what you attack. That is helpful until your dog pulls a second hut. Heel the pet. Park villagers who freeze on follow. Bring people who can carry loot home, not a parade that agroes every spear at once. Villagers and taming are support pages, not extra health bars.
Leave if the camp is larger than your food surplus. Happiness drops when people get hurt. Hurt people delay the next recruit. That loop is how a proud raid becomes a quiet save with one survivor and a lot of uneaten roots. Enemy tribes are optional content until a story beat says otherwise. Optional means optional.
Story, sandbox, and the aftermath
Campaign fights can be gated by quests. If an encampment will not update after you clearly won, you have met the 1.0 tick problem. Save, relog, try the other interaction on the fire, then open how to complete the story. Do not grind the same corpse for an hour.
After a win, butcher is not the only job. Take tools you do not yet craft. Leave decorations you cannot carry. 1.0.0.25 fixed some decorations that could not be destroyed; if a trophy prop is immortal, that may already be patched. Do not dismantle your own totem because you are angry at their totem.
Co-op raids need a caller. One person marks the retreat. Friendly fire no longer stacks aggro the old way, which is the only reason a panicked arrow through a friend should not start a second war. Host notes live on multiplayer.
Other humans are the reminder that Polylithic is not a wildlife screensaver. Scout, steal or spare, and go home while you still have a tribe to go home to.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Are enemy tribes in Polylithic 1.0?
Yes. They shipped with the full release, including a new story encampment and random enemy clothing.
Should I raid a camp on day one?
No. Feed your people, lock a bed, and learn combat first. A raid that injures recruits delays the next villager.
Can I recruit enemy NPCs?
Sometimes. 1.0 lets more NPCs join and auto-completes some member quests. Read the prompt before you throw a spear.
Do enemy tribes appear in Sandbox?
Generated worlds can still sprout hostile humans. Scout. See how to play sandbox.
